WHY YOUR HAIR CHANGES EVERY THREE MONTHS AND HOW TO NOTICE IT

It’s crucial to understand the different stages that your hair can change in order to promote healthy haircare

Article by Diane Shawe ME.d and Author

Did you know that your hair has a life of its own? But we intervene daily with various chemicals internally and externally applied then we bully the hair with unnaturally high temperatures, creams, sprays, tight braids and cornrows.

On top of that apart from the odd bad hair day, our hair actually goes through a natural cycle of growth consisting of three distinct stages, each of which can change its texture and appearance.

All of your hair is at different Growth Cycle

Hair Growth Cycle

The most notable of these is the growth phase, known as anagen, during which individual hair follicles grow for roughly a six year period.

This is followed by a 10-day-long transitional period known as catagen and a three month resting period, referred to as telogen, during which time the hair will shed.

After this, the hair follicles should remain inactive for roughly three months before the entire process is repeated. However, it’s worth noting that each hair follicle goes through the growth cycle at different times, otherwise your hair would all fall out at the same time.

It’s crucial to understand the three phases of the cycle in order to ensure you’re taking care of your hair appropriately, explains Diane Shawe of Need a Hair Makeover Specialist Salon.

“During the growing stage, the hair needs to be kept in the best condition as it will remain in this state for five to seven years,”

Meanwhile, during the catagen period it’s imperative to ensure that your hair is properly nourished so as to promote blood flow to the scalp, and recommends a hair mask or overnight treatment as a way to do this.

However, despite the distinct stages, it can be difficult to identify when they are occurring because the changes may be very subtle, but the more obvious reasons for changes is ageing.

Taking good care of your hair is important

“Over time, some women and men may notice thinning in their hair which is usually down to hormonal changes, health issues and too much use of external toxins applied through use of various haircare products. For instance some women report thicker, fuller hair during their pregnancy when they are producing more hormones, and then hair loss or thinning after they’ve given birth as the hormone levels return to normal.”

According to research and credible reports the average woman loses 50-100 hairs a day. While this shouldn’t be cause for concern, if evidence of extensive hair loss is something you’re worried about see your doctor or hair loss Specialist.

Many women are often persuaded to opt for a shorter cut when they are older, but you should seek advice on alternates and see if they may be able to suggest the best way to make your hair look fuller.

According to Hair Extensions and Hairloss expert and author Diane Shawe, the appearance of a person’s hair can also act as a “snapshot of their general health and wellbeing,” meaning it can also change outside of its natural cycle for a number of reasons such as dietary changes or health challenges.

Theres more to adding hair

The good thing is that hair can be changed and improved either by hair treatments, hair extensions or supplements, you really don’t have to have what nature gives you!”.

The way your hair transforms over time can also be affected by the amount of heat you expose it to, explains Diane as more and more women turn to high performance ceramic high temperature straighteners and curlers.

When you are a child, hair condition tends to be good as hair is not subjected to as much chemical or heat damage, but sadly this is also changing as advertisers target young teenagers who then pressure their parents into gifting or lending them these tools.

As you get older and start to use colours, chemical products and tools (hair dryers, straighteners, tongs), hair quality can diminish unless properly looked after and so this is why need a hair makeover often recommend having regular deep conditioning mask and steam treatments accompanied by a trim or cuts.

What could be the defining hairstyles in 2019? It’s not what you think..by Diane Shawe

This is a very big question. Just in the UK alone we see a diversity of hair trends across the various groups. However I have seen a surge in two areas regardless of the wearers hair type or length.

Article by Diane Shawe

Modern top-knots

Top-knots used to be the hairstyle of you did if you didn’t have time to do your hair or you was a granny. But then Chanel’s Fall 2018 ready-to-wear show happened.

The models appeared on the runway as if they had literally just thrown their hair up into the up-do and suddenly ‘undone’ hair was cool again.

For the first time in my life I actually wore a modern top bun and felt really chic.

The trick to the perfect ‘imperfectly perfect’ bun, is to tie your hair into a ponytail before twisting it into a bun, so that the ends remain loose and messy. Then, for added texture

Adult accessories

From the humble hair clip to more statement bows and ribbons, hair accessories have stolen the hair limelight in recent months. I predict a sophisticated version will only grow in popularity as women with limited time and wanting to make a statement reach for those clips, grips, bows, gems and pins.

“It really started over the summer months where the heat was extreme and so people were wearing their hair up and accessorising.

Although all of the accessories differ in shape and style, they all can be adapted to a multitude of looks which is why I think it will be key for 2019.” we are even seeing natural hair being accessorised by grown women.

Let’s hope we get another wrapping hot summer like 2918.

Undercutting your Hair Extensions Competition

Extracted from Getting Started in the Hair Extension Business by Diane Shawe

If your hair extension studio is a real under-cutter, care will have to be taken to keep costs as low as realistic as possible.

Don’t be shy when it comes to taking money for your services. Charge for the value of the benefits that you offer.

You must put a value on your services; look at your type of clientele, hair extension location, experience of employees, your clients’ needs and, the prices of the competition.

Price is sometimes seen as a sign of quality and value. Price can attract like-minded customers. They think that because your prices are high, the technician in your hair extension studio must be good. If your prices are high, it is important to promote to the high paying customers, the value of your service.

There are a lot of competitors, so low prices alone, might not be enough to keep the low paying customers coming back. Clients who look for bargains are not only looking for low prices, but they want to get great results too.

You must determine how much value you can offer. To be of value to clients, you must know what the clients’ needs are. Understand what benefits they wish to receive, what pain they want to relieve.

Order you copy today from Amazon or Google Play

The benefits they want might be a quick service with no waiting, or it could be that they want an expert doing their hair. They might prefer certain products used on their hair, or to know that they can be squeezed in at short notice occasionally.

Their pain might be that they begrudge spending time on their hair, or that they loathe technicians who don’t listen to them. It might be that they just haven’t found the right retail products to use at home.

Profit margins will be low, so a lot of clients will have to go through the hair extension studio, just for you to be able to pay the overheads. It will most likely mean offering fewer services and probably, rushing clients through. Even the employees will have to be paid a low salary.

In some cases, this could mean that the employees are much less experienced than you may like. You really need to decide on what sort of employees you want in your hair extension studio. You will find that the best technicians won’t want to work in a cheap hair extensions studio. Not only would it hurt their reputations, but they wouldn’t work for a low salary.

Your clientele will most likely be bargain hunters who probably won’t spend on retail products either.

Charge by experience
If your employees have exceptional skills or experience, you can charge more. If you promote these benefits well, you’ll find that clients don’t mind paying extra. A lot of clients don’t mind paying for the name, or the prestige.

Some hair extension studios charge by the experience of the hair technician performing the service. As employees reach certain levels of experience, they charge more. This seems to work very well for them.

53 facts, tips, and ideas that will surely give you the best ombre hair experience

ombre-hair-color-options

Ombre hair is not something new. Many celebrities have gone with this look and have made these hairstyles as memorable as their image on TV or in films. If you want to get that amazing look with two or even three color combinations to your hair, then you should definitely go ombre yourself and read on.

Guest Blogger: WigMall

Whether you are going to a hairstylist or if you want to do it yourself, it is best to learn as much about it as you can. One of the best things about going ombre is that you have a wide variety of colors and shades to choose from. You can choose the color for your hair roots, highlights and ends as long as you know the basics of ombre hair design.

Here’s a list of 53 facts, tips, and ideas that will surely give you the best ombre hair experience:

1. It Has A Simple Definition.

This style is often loved because it has a beautiful coloring effect where the bottom part of your hair looks a little bit lighter than the upper portion. To do this, you should bleach your hair’s lower portion. You should bleach the bottom part of the hair, and you dye it afterward. This will prevent your hair from looking brassy or orange-like in color. This step is useful only if you want to even out your ombre tone.

10 Costly Hair Extensions Mistakes by Diane Shawe

Celebrities on Red carpets and magazines have normalised hair extensions. Hair Extensions have been a trending topic among many women on YouTube. It is arguable that the main reason for the popularity of hair extensions is that one can get instant gratification. That extension adds to the thickness and fullness of hair in a shorter period of time than waiting for hair to grow.

As a woman, confidence is in constant flux, I know we all have those days that we just feel great. Our skin is glowing, our eyeliner went on just right, and our hair is lying the right way. And then we have those weeks where we just feel like our look has passed its expiration date.

Diane Shawe Author of ‘Getting Started in the Hair Extension Business’ and ‘How Hair Extensions are Sourced, Graded and Treated’ introduces the top 10 costly mistakes new and experienced clients make with their hair extensions.

1. Buying advertised premium Hair Extensions Cheaply

There is nothing wrong with cheap hair extensions but, when someone is marketing grade AAA virgin Brazilian double drawn human hair 18inches for £15 or £23 a bundle what sounds to Good to be true is often untrue.

If you do decide to buy this type of hair my advice is that they are only meant to be worn for fun or a couple of times.

Often cheap hair extensions are produced from mixed fibers and can look very glossy and healthy. If Worn excessively or worn to bed they will frizz and become matted.

All the other issues mentioned below would also be related.

So if you want your hair tho look like your favourite celebrity remember they are paying the going rates for the best.

2. Using Hair spray

Most hair extensions are processed abroad. In line with exporting regulations they have to be sprayed and sealed with an insect repellent so that insects cannot cross borders or the hair become infested by lice. Some hair extensions could be in packaging several months or a couple of years!

They are also subjected tho high pressure treatments such as colouring, perming and straightening. They then have tho be rehydrated and often gloss sealed to look enriching so you will buy and war them.

Hairspray from a can destroys all this. If you want to use a spray use pump action instead.

3. Leaving hair loose in bed

I advise all my clients to tie up their hair extensions at need time. Why?

To keep them from getting dried out from moisture from constantly being rubbed against the pillows.

To stop them becoming matted which would result in stressful brushing which causes premature loosening.

4. Wrong Brush

If your new tho hair extensions the brutish you choose to use will determine how your hair extensions look and are maintained.

The roots of your hair and the top of your hair extensions needed to be kept free from tangles short that the hair moves freely and naturally

You need to be able to brush your hair through so as to keep it tangle free workout tugging or causing pre mature loosening

The right brush will also help to make your hair look healtier and shiny.

5. Washing everyday

Hair Extensions do not produce their own oils, you have yup supplement and hydrate them yourself.

Washing them everyday will result in pre mature loosening as the water weighs them down and the oils in the shampoo makes them slide down with the weight of the water.

I know the objective is to probably wash your own greasy hair but it is best you separate the top of your own hair and wash that each day or use a reputable dry shampoo.

It is best to only wash your semi permanent hair extensions once a week to get the longest wear out of them.

6. Dehydration

Hair extensions will become dry and brittle and matt even more when they are dehydrated.

Central heating, air conditioned and being under electric lighting everyday and point 5 contributes to the drying out of hair extensions.

I recommend using a none oil based daily leave in conditioner. Spray from the roots through to the end every morning and before going to bed.

On the topic of Itchy scalp

People with normal to dry scalps will experience itching when wearing hair extensions because the hair extensions are absorbing what little moisture you have on your scalp so its making your scalp even more dry. Its important to spray the leave in conditioner onto your scalp.

With regards to clipins read my article about clipin.

7. Changing hair Extensions colour

In my professional opinion there should be no need to colour hair extensions because most of the popular colours are in distribution.

However as 90% of hair extensions come from Asia were all natural hair colour is black the only hair I will personally work with is 100% natural virgin hair.

If you are not experienced in knowing the difference between blended hair, human hair and virgin hair don’t attempt to re-colour it could be an expensive mistake.

8. Not preparing for holiday

OMG the amount of disaster stories I have heard with regards to this subject matter. Customers spend hundreds on lovely hair prior to flying out on that dream holiday only to end up with a partner or friend cutting it out. This is a big subject and the best I can do is recommend you download my care brochure by clicking here.

9. Oil based products

When you pour oil into water it floats, oil coats things, only the ingredient it is carrying penetrates. So when you put too much oil on your hair extensions it weighs them down, it sticks to your hair and attract the invisible particles to stick to your hair (the bits you see under a purple ultralight)

Try to use none oil based products, try not to commit murder by serums on your hair extensions.

10. Going to bed with wet hair

Why would you want to go to bed with your hair wet? Why would you be washing your hair that late anyway, why not in the morning? It makes no sense! Rant over… Just don’t do it! Matting, Tugging, Loss of hair so extensions look thinner, pre mature loosening I think you get the message.

Popular Black Hair Products Are Filled With Toxic Chemicals Linked To Disease, Study Finds

A new study claims that the most popular hair products for black women and children contain “multiple chemicals” linked to cancer, weight gain, asthma, and fertility issues, among other things.

Silent Springs Institute found that 80 percent of the 18 tested products (chosen based on customer surveys) contain high levels of chemicals that “disrupt” the endocrine system, which regulates metabolism, reproduction, and more. The product test was broken into six different categories: hot oil treatment, anti-frizz/polish, leave-in conditioner, root stimulator, hair lotion, and relaxer.

The study also found that 84 percent of the “detected chemicals were not listed on the product label,” while 72 percent of the products contained methyl paraben and diethyl phthalate (an acid that can emit toxic gases if burned). The highest numbers of parabens were found in hair lotions:

“The hair products tested contained 45 endocrine disrupting or asthma-associated chemicals, including every targeted chemical class. We found cyclosiloxanes, parabens, and the fragrance marker diethyl phthalate (DEP) at the highest levels, and DEP most frequently. Root stimulators, hair lotions, and relaxers frequently contained nonylphenols, parabens, and fragrances; anti-frizz products contained cyclosiloxanes.

Hair relaxers for children contained five chemicals regulated by California’s Proposition 65 [a 1986 law enacted to protect drinking water in the state from contamination from chemicals known to cause cancer, and reproductive issues] chemicals or prohibited by EU cosmetics regulation. Targeted chemicals were generally not listed on the product label.”

Higher levels of parabens were found in products targeted to black women compared to white women, the study uncovered. Additionally, research suggests that exposure to toxic chemicals in hair oils and relaxers could be directly linked to a “higher prevalence” of asthma in black girls and women, as well as early menstruation, fertility issues, obesity, uterine fibroids, and premature birth rates, along with increased cases of breast and endometrial cancers.

“These results indicate the need for more information about the contribution of consumer products to exposure disparities,” the study concludes. “A precautionary approach would reduce the use of endocrine disrupting chemicals in personal care products and improve labeling so women can select products consistent with their values.”

This isn’t the first time that perilous ingredients in black hair care products have been exposed. In 2016, Black Women for Wellness concluded a five-year study that found similar results.
